Local (our Jerusalem)

The Local Global Focus Team is responsible for mission partnerships and projects in the greater Kansas City area. Here are some of our Local Global Focus Ministry Partners and how you can get involved:

Hope Lodge Where Hope Lives… www.cancer.org/docroot/subsite/hopelodge/index.asp

Getting the right care sometimes means cancer patients must travel away from home, often to a cancer treatment facility in another city, which places even more of an emotional and financial burden during what is already a challenging time. The American Cancer Society is trying to make this difficult situation easier for cancer patients and their families through 26 Hope Lodges – free, temporary housing facilities for cancer patients who are undergoing treatment. But Hope Lodges are more than just a place to stay – they provide a home-like nurturing environment, so patients can get support from others going through the same experience. A cancer survivor’s recovery involves much more than medical treatments; it takes hope to heal. Hope Lodge offers the warmth and security of home in a setting where the love and encouragement of others enlighten and inspire guests. At Hope Lodge, guests rally around each other, building life-affirming connections and lifetime friendships.

NRBC ministers to those living at our local Hope Lodge. A group spends one evening a quarter providing a full meal and a game night for the cancer patients and their families.   (NRBC Champion – Sharri Hacker)

Kansas City Rescue Mission www.kcrm.org

Through a proven path from RELIEF to RECOVERY to RE-ENTRY, KCRM offers freedom from the past and hope for the future. Good food, safe shelter, comfortable beds, clean facilities, a Christ centered Environment, case management, a proven recovery program, job and life-skills training. All these things and more are why hundreds of people come through our doors each year. (NRBC Champion - Mike Valet)

Second Mile Ministrieswww.secondmileministries.com - www.milestoneacademy.org

Second Mile Ministries is committed to strengthening urban youth in every aspect of their lives. The foundation of the ministry is faith in Christ and helping young people making good moral decisions which leads to good moral lives. Education is a high priority of Second Mile. To help Kansas City youth achieve educational excellence, the Milestone Christian Academy high school was founded in 2006. MCA takes students of high potential who are caught in an educational downward spiral, and puts them in an academic environment where they can succeed. (NRBC Champion - Steve Johnson)

Hillcrest Transitional Housing - www.hillcresttransitionalhousing.org

A Transitional Housing program focused on moving families from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days. In exchange for rent/utility-free housing, residents are required by written agreement to work full time, obey the program guidelines, and attend volunteer taught classes in life skills, employment, community living, and budgeting. (NRBC Champion Adella Lunsford)

The Women’s Clinic of Kansas City - www.thewomensclinic.net

The Women's Clinic of Kansas City opened February 16, 2004 as a non-profit medical clinic serving Jackson County and the entire greater Kansas City area at 815 N. Noland Road in Independence, Missouri. The mission of TWC is to care for the well-being and education of women, particularly as it relates to women with a potentially difficult pregnancy. They have many services available for those facing unplanned pregnancies or other issues related to sexuality and parenting. Through medical, education and support services, TWC can provide services for the complete person in confidence and free of charge. (NRBC Champion - Carla Valet)

NRBC Youth Outreach

Monday’s during the summer are work days for NRBC youth. During June and July 2008 our youth and ministry staff went into the community to reach out in the name of Christ.   Ministries served by our youth program were the Salvation Army, City Union Mission, The Lighthouse, Harvesters, and the K.C. Rescue Mission. (NRBC Minister to Students- Wes Wakefield)

Meals on Wheels

Did you know that Meals on Wheels needs 75 drivers to deliver 450 meals per week? Independence Meals on Wheels is in need of regular volunteer drivers who would deliver 7 or 8 meals one day a week. Time involved is 1 to 1 ½ hours per day. They are also in need of substitute drivers and winter or summer relief drivers. You will receive a well-defined, mapped out route to deliver the meals to those in need. (NRBC Champion – Sara Smith)

NRBC Food Pantry

The NRBC food pantry not only supplies food for people outside the church but for members also. The following items are always needed:  powdered milk, canned tuna, tuna helper, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, soups (not cream soups), jelly, crackers, macaroni and cheese, instant oatmeal, canned vegetables and fruits, cereal, hamburger helper, and peanut butter. Please place these items in the grocery cart in the Welcome Center. (NRBC Champion – Molly Mahnke)

Angel Tree Ministries

Right now an estimated 2.3 million children have a mom or dad in prison. At Christmas NRBC reaches out to area children by providing gifts in their parent’s names. There are also opportunities to deliver these gifts in the name and love of Christ.  (NRBC Champion – Trudy Cowan)
